Ivor Wigham's European Rally School

Pocketbike race, Starke - November 15th-16th, 2008

Mid-South Minimoto hosted a big race at the European Rally School track in Starke, Florida.

Qualifiers

First attempt of the 2.5/Cag class qualifier number 1 - Sunday
This race was red flagged halfway through the first lap due to a crash involving Diggie and Casey. Unfortunately, Casey received a suspected broken collar bone. I had a fairly good view of the crash - so I slowed the video down just before the event.

Restarted 2.5/Cag class qualifier number 1 - Sunday
Ricky, Rick, Tod, Derek, Darrell, Jeremy, Oscar, and Al all get good starts and are in front of me.
Jeremy and I get wedged together in the last turn of lap 1 as he pushes me to the outside and into the grass. He then pulls me 2/3 of the way to the other side of the track before we break apart (I'm sure his side of the story is different! But luckily neither of us had a get-off!) Jeremy and my tie-up allows Mikey to slip past me and the front group is trying to disappear!
I get my head back into the game and push my little Blatini as hard as I can. Al leaves the track in turn 3 and comes back on just ahead of me in turn 4. I push harder and take him in 6 - now I can see Derek and Oscar coming within attack range. Derek drops behind me with a small mistake in the last turn and I focus on Oscar by Rossi'ing him in turn 6.
The video shuts down in turn 2 of the last lap - Dang.

2.5/Cag qualifier 2 - Sunday
Darrell, Tod, Ricky, Oscar, and Derek get good starts. I pass Oscar through turn 4 and focus an Derek because Darrell, Tod and Ricky are starting to break away at the front. But Derek and my pace seems to be good because we are gaining on the leaders. Something happens to Dereks bike a lap and a half later and he falls out and I begin my charge on Ricky - who has fallen off the pace that Darrell and Tod are setting. Diggie come around me in turn 1, so I hang with him as we blast up to Ricky. Diggie passes Ricky in turn 9 and I pass Ricky half a lap later in turn 5. The remainder of the race is uneventful, but you can see Diggie taking advantage of his old man (Darrell) to the line!

Production qualifier 1 - Sunday
Derek, Ricky, Diggie, Rick, and Jeremy get a good start in front of me. Randy passes me and I pass Jeremy into turn 10. Diggie crashes in turn 11. Randy goes off track into turn 2 and I pass Rick in turn 4. No action after that - Derek and Ricky are too far ahead to see.

Races

2.4/Cag Race - Sunday
Tod, Ricky, Diggie, Darrell, Oscar, and Derek get good starts again. Tod and Darrell crash in turn 10 while Derek and I pass Oscar. Diggie leads with Ricky, Derek, and Me following. Derek's bike is pulling super strong down the front straight and he gaps me substantially into turn 1. Derek passes Ricky in turn 4 and sets his sights on Diggie who is way at the front. Derek passes Diggie in turn 4. It takes me a few laps but I finally make a pass on Ricky in turn 6 - then I start reeling in Diggie. I finally pass Diggie in turn 9 of the last lap - but Derek is so far ahead I can't see him anymore.
Final standing - 1st Derek, 2nd Me, 3rd Ricky.

Production race - Sunday
Tod, Derek, and Diggie break away off the start and Ricky holds me off until turn 11 and then I start my charge to the front group. I'm up to the Derek and the group by turn 11 of the next lap. And concentrate hard and make a pass on him through turn 3 but I go in too hot into turn 4 and he takes it back. I'm getting ready for Derek again into turn 10, but I follow his line which was too early an entry and I am too wide on the exit - my rear tire drops off the track and I end up tumbling down the track. I remount in 8 seconds, but my hopes of a 3rd are dashed. Ricky has passed me and I use the rest of the race to catch back up to him. The helmet cam footage ends at the crash.

Super Production race - Sunday
Steve, Randy, Darrell, Derek, and Oscar start in front of me. I pass Oscar in turn 6 - while Steve, Derek, Randy, and Darrell form a tight group up front. Steve and Randy begin their break-away by the end of the first lap and Darrell, Derek, and I make up the second group. I finally make a move on Derek in turn 12 of lap 3 and start focusing on catching Darrell. I am on top of Darrell by turn 6 and begin probing for a weakness - then on lap 5 I feel like I'm hit from behind going through turn 9, and then in turn 10 it feels like my rear tire has gone flat so I have to pull off the track. It turns out that my axle had loosened and worked its way partially out - lucky for me that this didn't turn out to be a bad crash!
I was disappointed that my race ended like this, but man was it some fun racing while it lasted!
